The thermometer had dropped to 18 degrees below zero, but still chose to sleep in the porch as usual. In the evening, the most familiar sight to me would be stars in the sky. Though they were a mere sprinkle of twinkling dots, yet I had become so accustomed to them that their occasional absence would bring me loneliness and ennui.

It had been snowing all night, not a single star in sight. My roommate and I, each wrapped in a quilt, were seated far apart in a different comer of the porch, facing each other and chatting away.

She exclaimed pointing to something afar, "Look, Venus in rising" I looked up and saw nothing bur a lamp round the bend in a mountain path. I beamed and said pointing to a tiny lamplight on the opposite mountain, "It's Jupiter over there!"

More and more lights came into sight as we kept pointing here and there. Lights from hurricane lamps flickering about in the pine forest created the scene of a star-studded sky. With the distinction between sky and forest obscured by snowflakes, the numerous lamp-lights now easily passed for as many stars.

Completely lost in a make-believe world, I seemed to see all the lamplights drifting from the ground. With the illusory stars hanging still overhead, I was spared the effort of tracing their positions when I woke up from my dreams in the dead of night.

Thus I found consolation even on a lonely snowy night!

One evening I look out the window of my secluded cabin, and there are soft languid flakes falling in the golden lamplight. They fall all night, while the voice of the Teal River becomes more and more hushed and the noises of the forest die away. By dawn, the whole world of stream and wood and mountain has been kindled to a white flame of beauty.

I go out in the early morning and there is such silence that even breath is a profanation. The mountain to the north has a steel-blue light on it, and to the west the sky still holds something of the darkness of the night. To the east and the south a faint pink is spreading. I look up and see the morning star keeping white watch over a white world.

Soon the whole sky is azure and flamingo. Every branch of every tree is weighted with cold and stillness; every fallen log is overlaid with silver. The wild berry bushes have puffballs of jeweler‘s cotton here and there along their branches, and the stark roots of hemlocks and cedars have become grottoes of quartz and chrysolite.

After heavy snowfalls, it is the evergreens that are the loveliest, with their great white branches weighted down until they are almost parallel with the trunks. They seem like giant birds with their wings folded against the cold.

But after a light fall,it is the deciduous trees that are the most beautiful. They are so fragile,so ethereal, that it seems even the sound of the rivers might shatter them as they appear to drift like crystal smoke along the banks. The bushes are silver filigree,so light,so much on tiptoe in this enchanted world. Even the slightest breeze sends the snow shimmering down from them, leaving the branches brown and bare and rather pitiful.

The sky is clear blue now and the sun has flung diamonds down on meadow and bank and wood. Beauty, the virgin, walks here quietly, quietly. Her feet make no sound and not sign upon the immaculate snow. The silence is dense and deep. Even the squirrels have stopped their ribald chattering. And faint snowbird whisperings seems to emphasize the stillness.

Night comes, and the silence holds. There is a feeling about this season that is in no other—a sense of snugness, security and solitude. It is good to be out in the bracing cold, which clears the mind and invigorate the heart. Blanket, fire is a first-rate companion. The coffee is full-bodied and fragrant; shadows dance on the walls and the world outside my windows is very still. I am more than content to begin and end a day like this amid all the calm clarity of wintered earth.

Outside the moon is high with a dark-blue sky behind it and with mountains, plains and forests of silver lying below. The trees, the bushes and the tall ferns are carved with alabaster. The river runs like quicksilver between the porcelain of its banks.

Earth and heavens glitter, and the sword-fern clumps are diamond sunbursts pinned to the silver-sequined ground. But it is all in silence. There are shadows from the stars. They are white, sharp lights in the midnight blue sky and appear literally to spark with coldness. I feel as though I can see every star in the universe.

It seems impossible for one human heart to contain all this loveliness without breaking. Perhaps the ache that is in mine comes from the knowledge that all this beauty is so ephemeral, that it will be gone almost before I have done more than touch it with my fingertips.

"I'm going to marry you one day." Beth said to her long time crush Jake. She wore her favorite blue teddy bear shirt. Her four-year-old blue eyes shined in the sun.

"No you're not, you're a girl." Jake said.

The California afternoon wind blew his light brown hair. Jumping off the monkey bars he laughed back to class.

Sitting alone and confused she didn't know what to do. Beth sat high on the monkey bars crying. How can her future husband just leave like that?

She was going to get him, but how? "I will not let him get away! I won't! I won't!"

15 years later:

"I love you, too, Jake." Hanging up the phone she caught her mom smiling. "What?"

"When is he coming in from France? He's been there for awhile." She sat down on her black leather couch. The house was made up of different Indian stuff. On the walls were different dream catchers. Her mother was a full blood Cherokee Indian. She passed away when Beth was eight.

"He has a lot of schooling to do right now. Maybe this Saturday."

Fixing her short overalls she thought of Jake. Who would have thought they were going to date when she turned five?

"Is he still living in Colorado?" Her mother Kay wore a white tank top with tan pants. And long blonde hair with pretty blue eyes. She was the most beautiful woman on Earth. And Beth is looking like her by the minute.

"Yeah, I hate having a long distance relationship." She plopped on a leather chair.

"It's ok baby, you know he loves you more than anything in this world. Love will keep you together."

Beth could not help but smile. Her mother is and will always be her best friend.

Jake sat in his hotel the school rented for him. School of law. He loved going overseas for everything. But he missed being with Beth. That hurt him the most.

Spending the lonely nights in the hotel made him think of how much it would hurt to spend the rest of his life without her in it.

Getting up off his bed he went into the bathroom. Watching his reflection in the mirror, all he could think about was Beth. He would leave Thursday, and get there Friday night.

Turning off the light he jumped into the cold bed. On a coffee table near his bed rested a frame with them in it. It was taken at a beach about two years ago. It was the best time of their lives.

It was Thursday morning and Beth waited for Jake's morning phone call. He would call at eight — it was ten.

Beth got out of bed and got her favorite blue tank top. She took off her shirt and screamed at the top of her lungs.

"What? What?" Her mother came rushing into her room. Staring at her naked daughter she saw the lump of her breast. "Does it hurt?"

Beth could only say "No." Looking at the lump, she cried in pain.

"Let's get you to the doctor."

"Ok, let me get dressed."

Shutting the door behind her, the room became silent. Shaking she put on her shirt, and ran out into the living room.

"Mom, where are my blue shorts?"

"In the dresser, second drawer."

Finishing getting dressed she hopped into her car. Her red mustang drove like a baby.

They waited for the doctor to come in. Beth could not begin to think she had cancer. As her mind drifted off her cell phone rang.

"Hello?" Her heart skipped a beat, hoping it was Jake.

"Hey, how are you?" He asked out of breath.

"Could be better. Why didn't you call me this morning?"

"Sorry, school got ahold of me today."

"Why are you out of breath?" Looking stunned she stared at her mother.

"I'm so sorry, he'll call back." Her mother gave Beth a hug.

The doctor came in, and greeted his self. "Hello. I'm Kevin Baker." He smiled while examining her breast.

Love and Time 爱和时间

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.

Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.

When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.

Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,

"Richness, can you take me with you?"

Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."

Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!"

"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you."

"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"

Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.

Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder,

Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"

"It was Time," Knowledge answered.

"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"

Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."

If I knew

If I knew it would be the last time I'd see you fall asleep,

I would tuck you in more tightly and "pray the lord , your soul to keep".

If I knew it would be the last time I'd see you walk out the door,

I would give you a hug and kiss you, and call you back for more.

If I knew it would be the last time I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise.

I would video tape each action and word , so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time I could spare an extra minute or so to stop and say"I love you, "instead of assuming you would know I do.

If I knew it would be the last time I would be there so share you day,

I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's slways tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and certainly there's another chance to make everthing right.

There will always be another day, to say "I love you", and certainly there's another chance to say our"anything I can do?"

But, just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get,

I'd like to say how much I love you, and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike, and today may be the last chance you get to hold your love tight.

So, if you'er waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today?

For, if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely regret the day...

That you didn't take that extra time for a smile, a huge, or a kiss, and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish.

So, hold your loved ones close today, and whisper in their ear, that you love them very much and you'll always hold them dear.

Take time to say"I'm sorry", "please forgive me", "thank you"or""it's okay.

And if tomorrow never comes, you'll have no regrets about today.
